Atlanta Electrician: Security Lighting Options

Security Lighting

During the time of year when days become shorter, security lighting becomes an important asset to deter or detect intrusions or other criminal activity on your property.

It can also be used to increase a feeling of safety. Understanding your security lighting options is an important part of safety and crime prevention.  The Security Lighting options below are the most common types used in residential applications:

Flood Fixtures

Flood light fixtures are great for open areas that present the need for wide angle light distribution and high illumination output. These fixtures can be LED type or Incandescent bulb type and are generally waterproof, very flexible to use and can be mounted on a variety of surfaces.

Motion Lights

Motion detector lights feature a small electronic sensor that detects infrared waves.  In other words, it can read the heat wave coming from moving objects. When the detector senses an object moving across its range of input, the motion sensors will electronically turn the lights on.  This is especially true for warmer objects such as people, animals or cars.

Landscape Lighting

Landscape lighting, also known as garden lighting, includes all outdoor illumination of private property spaces and landscapes for the purpose of safety and security, nighttime uses of space or decoration.

Photocell controlled Lights

A photocell-controlled light only comes on when it is dark, at night or during darker lighting, such as,  storm clouds, and turns off during the day. It’s a good option for when you want light all night long without having to remember to turn on an outside light. A photocell can be added to most any fixture, and some come with it built in. The only downside is that a photocell-controlled light can burn through bulbs much quicker than a motion light that only comes on when it detects motion.

What About Light Bulbs?
Incandescent, fluorescent, and halogen are the three most typically used types of light bulbs. They are used in everything from your bedside table lamp, recessed lighting fixtures, and even your favorite restaurant’s sign.

LED lights power consumption is about 80% less than incandescent bulbs and have a life span 45 times longer than that of filament type bulbs.
